FAQs

Ground Water Protection

The Massachusetts Department of Agriculture is responsible for protecting public drinking water and supply wells from pesticide contamination. You can find out where the protected areas in your town are. Go to www. mass.gov/agr. Click at the top on Programs, then click on the left on index of programs, A to Z, then click on Drinking Water Protection. Then click on the left on Zone II Areas listed by town, then click on your town. When you see the map, you can click on Legend to find out what the color codes mean. Pesticide restrictions only apply to Zone II or IWPA areas, the pink areas. These are primary recharge areas that can pump more than 100,000 gallons per day. To see the list of prohibited pesticides, go back to the page titled, Water Quality and Pesticides. Click in the middle of page on Groundwater Protection List.

Did you know that all people who apply pesticides for hire must be a certified Pesticide Commercial Applicator and hold a license? If somene is applying pesticides and is not licensed, he is not knowledgeable. Why take this risk on your property? You can ask to see his license.
