Garden Work Schedule

 
Gardens are usually tended from March until November. It is important to tend the gardens before and after bloom times to ensure optimal garden conditions.
 
Sample Work Schedule:
 
March
Prune most shrubs. Remove deer net. Cut back perennials that were left for winter interest. Leaf cleanup.
 
April
Apply compost and mulch if needed. Fertilize perennials. Prune lavender, Santolina and rose.
 
May
Stake floppy perennials. Apply insecticidal soap for lacebugs and sawflies.  Weed.
 
June
Prune flowering shrubs after bloom. Cut back perennials that grow excessively long stems. Fertilize roses. Weed.
 
July
Weed and do special projects.
 
August
Fertilize roses. Cut back thyme and groundcovers. Divide and transplant spring blooming perennials. Weed.
 
September
Fertilize woody shrubs and small trees. Edge the beds. Cut out dead wood from shrubs and trees.
 
October
Net yews, rhodies and hollies if eaten by deer. Cut out dead leaves from Chamaecyparis and arborvitae. Cover areas for new garden beds with paper, compost and mulch.
 
November
Cut back perennials. Cleanup leaves. Shred prunings for mulch.
